Myofascial Release (MFR)

Myofascial Release is a specialized, hands on treatment approach aimed at improving the mobility of the fascial system. Fascia is a tough connective tissue found throughout the body. It is an uninterrupted structure, almost like a three dimensional spider web from head to foot. In a healthy state, fascia can stretch and move easily, but with physical trauma and the resultant inflammatory response the fascia loses this flexibility and becomes very tight. Areas of myofascial restriction often feel hard and tender to touch. Myofascial restrictions can put excessive pressure on pain sensitive structures, such as nerves, muscles, and blood vessels. This "binding down" can cause pain, stiffness, decreased motion and increased difficulty with movement as muscles are forced to work harder to overcome the "drag" in the system. Myofascial Release treatment effectively identifies and releases these myofascial restrictions in order to decrease pain and stiffness and increase the amount and ease of motion, leading to improved function.
